The Hollywood rumor mill was set a churnin' last week when news broke that Universal was reportedly considering moving forward with a "Bridesmaids" sequel without star and co-writer Kristen Wiig.
Given the film's tremendous success — $100 million box-office gross and worldwide acclaim from critics and audiences alike — it's not surprising that Universal would want to line up a "Bridesmaids" follow-up as soon as possible, no matter who is involved. However, the official word from the studio was that they would ideally like to have the entire cast back for a second movie, but if a good idea for a sequel arises that involves new characters, they might move forward without Wiig.
When MTV News caught up with director Paul Feig and co-star Wendi McLendon-Covey at the People's Choice Awards on Wednesday, where their film took home the award for Best Comedy Movie, we asked them about getting the gang back together for a sequel.
"We're all optimistic; we would love to do it," Feig said. "We loved working together. It was so much fun. Everybody is busy now, but if we can come together and make it as good or better than the first one, then I think we'd all love to do it."
McLendon-Covey added, "And Kristen Wiig won't have a day off for the next 10 years."
"Our goal is to never let Kristen sleep ever again," Feig joked.
When we mentioned that we would be happy to see them all again in any movie, with or without any bridesmaids or weddings, Feig said, "I think even different characters [would be fun]. As long as we get the gang together, it would be a lot of fun."
